The purpose of this report is to provide an introduction to the structural design of solid propellant grains, with emphasis on preliminary design analysis and the physical importance of design characteristics. The design of a grain is based upon the combination of propulsion needs of the missile, environmental requirements and envelope limitations. The internal ballistician and the structural engineer must seek a balance between their individual 'optimums' to achieve a functionally reliable system. In addition, the grain has to be produced at a reasonable cost. (Author)
