This reference aid is a general guide to the internal structure of the USSR Ministry of Railways, based on information available as of 15 February 1989. It identifies individuals who hold positions in the ministry apparatus, the 32 railroads, and the railroads' various divisions. On 1 January 1988 the ministry underwent a structural reorganization. Thus, an individual may still be listed with an old organizational unit if there has been no specific identification of him with the new unit. The primary source of information for appointments and releases of individuals is the Moscow newspaper, GUDOK, the organ of the USSR Ministry of Railways and the Central Committee of the Railroad Transport and Transportation Construction Workers Trade Union. This reference aid is prepared in three-column format. Column 1 shows the individual's position, column 2 identifies the individual, and column 3 lists the date the individual assumed or vacated the position. Dates are preceded by the abbreviations ap for appointed, re for released, id for identified, co for confirmed, and de for deceased.
