What do we need to know in order to make further progress in reducing impaired driving and its consequences. This was the central question of the 1999 summer workshop of the TRB Committee on Alcohol, Other Drugs, and Transportation. The workshop brought together committee members and outside experts from the United States and other countries to identify research needs and priorities. The workshop also served as a forum for NHTSA, which is convening a series of expert panels on various topics in developing its strategic plan for behavioral research in traffic safety. It is anticipated that the results of the workshop, presented in the circular, will provide useful ideas for researchers and funders.
