Due to climatic conditions nearly all the cars and about 60% of the trucks in Norway are using studded tires during the winter season. This creates a severe wear problem on roads and streets carrying more than 3000 vehicles a day. The rut depth due to wear may be as much as 20 mm in one winter on the most trafficked roads. The annual cost totals NOK 300-400 million (USD 50-60 million). The extensive wear has resulted in various efforts to reduce the problem. The efforts include development of equipment and software to improve maintenance planning, research work in laboratory and field to raise the wear resistance of the mixes, and use of various recycling and trackpaving technics to reduce the cost of maintenance.
