This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flows generated by two inlet ports of generic shape under steady flow conditions using laser-Doppler anemometry and video flow visualization. The adoption of refractive index matching enabled measurements to be made in all parts of the port and cylinder. The aim of the research was to systematically assess the various geometrical features of the inlet ports and their effects on the flow structures generated both inside the ports and in the cylinders.
