Guidelines for the layout and signing of uncontrolled midblock pedestrian crossings have been implemented and are evaluated in the report. The guidelines recommended new road signs and markings which would improve both road-user behavior and the conspicuousness of the crossings. Two types of area were chosen for testing: where drivers readily give way to pedestrians and where drivers fail to give way. Evaluation techniques employed were before-and-after video surveys, roadside surveys, accident analyses, and the opinions of the local authorities who implemented the system. Video surveys showed that more drivers gave way to pedestrians with the new system. The roadside survey indicated that the majority of the drivers (75 percent) considered the new system to be an improvement on the old system. Accident analyses established that the new system did not cause more accidents than the old system. The three local authorities that implemented the new system agreed that it improved pedestrian safety and conspicuousness.
