The purpose of the report is to evaluate the use of the rumble stripe in decreasing maintenance costs of highway striping and improving driving safety. A rumble stripe is a textured highway paint stripe. The stripe is cut in concrete highways. It consists of a longitudinal groove pattern cut the length of a regular paint stripe and transverse cuts which allow drainage and provide a rumble effect. The report is mostly limited to the safety aspect of the visibility stripe. The investigation has shown that the visibility stripe is superior to the regular stripe in visibility, especially during a rainstorm. The visibility stripe increases driving safety and should be used in highways where raised traffic markers are subject to snowplow damage. (Author)
