The report describes tests performed to demonstrate the benefits to the Marine Industry of equipping vessels with beacon transponders. The advantages of radar signal enhancement by the beacon transponder and elimination of sea and rain clutter from the radar P.P.I. was demonstrated. Certain practical difficulties were encountered. Recommendations of future transponder design to eliminate these difficulties are included in the report.
