The type of powerplant and its associated auxiliaries has a significant effect on the cost of automation. This study is concerned with the technical and economic analysis of the available powerplant types for marine application. The problem of automating a merchant ship was studied through the automation of a 'C-4 Mariner' dry cargo ship. The present steam powerplant rated at 17,500 normal horsepower was used as a reference throughout this study. A summary is given for the various 17,500 horsepower powerplants installed in the 'C-4 Mariner' merchant ship. The machinery costs reflect an unautomated system. Hamilton Standard Division has compiled the automation costs of the various powerplant types. In addition to the present steam plant, a lightweight gas turbine, an industrial gas turbine, a directdrive Diesel, and a high pressure steam plant were studied. (Author)
