An experimental cycle route scheme was started in Peterborough in July 1977. This report describes the results of traffic studies carried out up to 12 months after the opening of the experiment and of travel and attitude surveys carried out up to 6 months after opening. Accident data collected over 6 months were insufficient to enable any conclusions to be drawn on the effect of the routes on the safety of cyclists. Though cycle use was not significantly changed by the availability of the cycle routes, the scheme was outstandingly popular with cyclists, pedestrians, residents and motorists alike. The cycle routes became a permanent part of the transport network in Peterborough in October 1978. (Copyright (c) Crown Copyright 1979.)
