CFAV QUEST is a specially designed quiet ship used for underwater acoustic research at Defence Research Establishment Atlantic. QUEST was commissioned in 1969, however, advances in sonar technology since that time required additional silencing of the ship propellers. As a result, a joint propeller design and model test program was undertaken with the Netherlands Ship Model Basin. The shortcomings of the present propellers are described and a comparison is given each model and full scale propulsion results. The design criteria and techniques used for a new set of propellers are reviewed, the suitability of the new propellers is assessed in relation to propulsion and cavitation criteria. Further, the effect on propeller performance and cavitation of modifying the shaft support from a bossing to an A-bracket is examined.
