The evaluation of pavements in general and of bituminous pavements in particular is essential when making decisions on their repair. In order to evolve an objective method of evaluation of bituminous pavements, a series of road sections which, climatologically speaking, can be said to lie in the same region, were scanned in various ways. The road sections studied were chosen from the national highways, the provincial highways, roads belonging to local authorities and agricultural roads; the total length was about the same as that of the ASSHO test sections (80 km). This paper contains a thorough description of the work carried out, the results obtained and the phenomenological laws which can be deducted from them.
