This document is the final report for a special study of used cars in the diagnostic demonstration project. CSC received and analyzed 1,309 used car owner survey questionnaires voluntarily submitted by new program participants in the first quarter of 1976. It was found that most vehicles (model years 1968-1973) given thorough safety and emissions inspections failed at least one inspection item, and that used cars purchased from dealers tend to have higher numbers of defects when compared to the general automobile population.
