The history of the Spacelab program evolution is briefly reviewed. Limitations and constraints as well as the subsystem resources available to potential users are stressed. A broad outline of the current status, Spacelab key design features, and subsystems and major Spacelab elements are described. Management interrelationships with NASA and the respective roles of ESA and NASA are summarized. A description of ESA's utilization planning for Spacelab is presented.
