Different configurations of Aeroassisted Orbital Transfer Vehicles (AOTV) are investigated in the context of their performance potential. Evaluating the performance of a candidate vehicle takes into consideration the efficiency of trajectory maneuvers as well as the loads acting on the vehicle. To carry out the vehicle analysis, a computer program was developed which is capable of calculating the complete exo/endoatmospheric optimal trajectory of an AOTV. In addition to the comparative evaluation of different vehicle configurations, special interest is given to the sensitivities of vehicle performance due to inaccuracies in the physical models. For this purpose, different models were used to describe atmospheric deviations or aerodynamic uncertainties in a more or less realistic way. Graphics illustrating the complex interdependencies between trajectory optimization, state and control variables, and other parameters of influence are included.
