One hypothesis being tested is that there is a U-shaped relationship between accident-involvement rate and the speed deviation of the accident-involved vehicle from the average of the surrounding traffic flow. This hypothesis is being tested by the use of accident and speed data collected in Monroe County, Indiana. This interim report contains a summary of the accident and speed data which have been collected on or before February 28, 1969. It also describes the procedures being used to collect and analyze the data. A U-shaped relationship between involvement rate and speed deviation appears to exist. The number of accident involvements per million vehicle miles ranges from about 2.4 for speed deviations near zero to approximately 28 for large negative deviations and approximately 20 for large positive deviations of the speed of the accident-involved vehicle from the mean traffic speed.
