The cost and complexity of maintaining aircraft in the Air Force inventory escalates with time. New methods are required to increase the cost effectiveness of fleet aircraft maintenance while simultaneously decreasing down time and improving readiness rates. A system is being developed which can collect details of usage of each helicopter in the fleet automatically. The resulting data base can then be used in conjunction with analytical processes to determine component inspection intervals using Damage Tolerance Assessment (DTA) techniques. This will replace the present assumption of one universal usage spectrum for all, regardless of the actual usage of individual aircraft. The helicopter peculiar aspects of component life estimation and the present methodology will be reviewed. The new system will be described and the process involved will be outlined.
