A flexible cover for use with the Type S flush-deck nozzle installed on aircraft carrier flight decks has been evaluated. The cover was cut from a sheet of silicone rubber and affixed to the nozzle with a screw fitting into the hole normally provided for insertion of the center plug. The purpose of the cover is to provide protection against entry of foreign material with consequent clogging of the orifice. It was found that the cover, which could be readily installed on all existing nozzles, did not interfere with the normal discharge pattern characteristics. Also, the cover is capable of providing a 'built-in' masking when the flight deck is anti-skid coated because a typical epoxy coating did not adhere to the rubber. The rubber material is stable up to 800F, and above this temperature it burns to a harmless powdery ash without melting. No performance data were obtained on the cover's ability to resist mechanical damage from vehicle and aircraft movement. (Author)
