Fuel/air mixtures were ignited in a chamber at 20 C to determine the necessity for using spark free tools during aircraft refuelling. The most readily ignited concentration was 1.15 l/cum. At an electrode distance of 1.7 mm the ignition energy was found to lie between 3.4 mJ and 3.7 mJ. The composition of F40 fuel is shown to differ from sample to sample.
