The Lockheed-Georgia Company, under contract to the Federal Highway Administration, has investigated the crashworthiness characteristics of representative 1970 model passenger car roof structures. Both static and dynamic tests were performed to establish a correlation between these types of tests and to obtain information from which a performance specification can be developed for future roof structure designs. Five passenger car bodies and five complete automobiles having curb weights varying from approximately 2500 to 4000 pounds were used as test specimens in this investigation. The structural characteristics of these specimens are summarized in terms of ultimate strength (maximum loads), deflections, accelerations, and strains at selected points on the body. Correlation between static and dynamic testing techniques having a moderate degree of accuracy has been developed. It has been shown, however, that the repeatability of drop tests is not good because of the number of uncontrolled variables that are present. Recommendations for design criteria for future roof structure designs are presented. (Author)
