The extremely high safety requirements in air transportation require a proper understanding of human pilot behavior under extreme weather conditions. Advanced research in this area must utilize flight simulator equipment that is able to reproduce critical flight conditions with great fidelity. The central problem of this research was to investigate which relevant system knowledge should be used as a model based control strategy, and to quantity the extent to which this improves the controlled dynamics of the simulator. First, the full design process was defined, structured, and evaluated. This began with modeling and analysis, followed by control synthesis and, finally, testing the system.
