One hundred forty fleet automobiles based in Los Angeles were used to determine the influence of miles-per-gallon meters on fuel economy. Seventy cars were instrumented with the meters, and 70 were used without meters for control purposes. Fuel use and mileage records were collected over a 12-week period. The cars were used primarily for commuting in a mixture of highway, urban, and suburban driving.
