This paper describes a preliminary effort to develop and evaluate a computer based system to provide specialized technical data for use by technicians in assessing damage to aircraft resulting from accident or battle damage. The system used two and three dimensional computer graphics to represent aircraft structures and systems. The graphics provide information to aid the technician in identifying damaged components. The system also provides ready access to parts and repair information. A prototype was developed using off-the-shelf equipment and evaluated by having technicians and engineers use the system for a series of assessment exercises. The results indicate that the concepts tested have significant potential to improve the damage assessment process. However, advances in hardware and software technology are required to make such a system practical.
