The vibratory response of the USCGC POLAR SEA to ice induced loads during the trafficability tests of winter 1981 is presented. Vibratory trials were carried out from 6 January to 11 February 1981. The data recorded on magnetic and video tapes consists of vertical, athwartship, and fore and aft accelerations at various locations within the ship, strain measurements at frames 161 and 171, ship's speed, ice conditions, etc. Post trial analysis includes calculation of the fundamental frequencies of the hull girder up to the 5th and 6th modes, comparison of calculated frequencies with those recorded by the accelerometers, assessing the propulsion train vibrations in the longitudinal mode and formulation of a mathematical model for extracting the forcing function causing the ship board vibrations. A procedure for retrieving the raw data collected during the trials is also presented.
