On August 3, 1994, westbound Amtrak (National Railroad Passenger Corporation) train 49 derailed on Conrail (Consolidated Rail Corporation) trackage at milepost 406.7 near Batavia, New York. Ten crewmembers and 108 passengers sustained injuries. The major safety issues included in this report are the lack of Federal and industry guidelines for flattened rail head conditions and the integrity of passenger car seats. The report also discusses the timeliness and adequacy of emergency response services.
