The objective of this analysis is to evaluate the effectiveness of restraints in preventing head/face injury-contacts with interior rail-like surfaces, i.e., the front header, A-pillar, siderail, and B-pillar. In order to make comparisons by restraint use, an injury-contact rate is calculated as the number of injury-producing contacts per hundred involved occupants. Data are from the 1988-1992 National Accident Sampling System (NASS) Crashworthiness Data System (CDS). The analysis is limited to passenger vehicle drivers in towaway, frontal impacts. Special attention is given to head/face contacts with interior rail surfaces, particularly the front header and A-pillar. The fundamental finding is that the combination of airbags with three-point restraints substantially reduces the incidence of serious (AIS2+) head/face injuries from contact with the front rail system.
