Differences in accident exposure for different lighting conditions and road conditions in various parts of Sweden during different periods of the year are discussed. Accident exposure was measured in terms of the accident rate, i.e., the number of accidents per million kilometers of pair of axles. The network investigated comprises the national road network, and the accident material refers to 1973. Lighting conditions refers to daylight/darkness, and road conditions refers to bare ground/ice or snow. Based on traffic counts on the national road network during 1973, vehicle mileage could be distributed on these various external conditions as well as on region and month. The accident data was correspondingly distributed. In this way it was possible to express accident exposure with the aid of accident rates for various external conditions.
