The purpose of the report is to present (1) the serviceability concept as developed at the AASHO Road Test, (2) some of the work done to relate the Road Test serviceabilities to other areas, (3) correlations developed and suggested for determination of present serviceability on Investigation 183 test sections (this includes some special studies considering the Minnnesota roughometer, texture of the surface, calibration of the roughometer, etc.), and (4) conclusions with recommendations on how the present serviceability of Minnesota sections can be determined and how other methods can be incorporated into this procedure. The variation of present serviceability with time or traffic can be used to establish the performance of a test section. Methods for determining the traffic in terms 18,000-lb single axle loads are presented in Special Report 3. Determination of serviceability on the test section at various times makes it possible to define performance in the same terms as at the Road Test and thus to compare directly the performance of the Minnesota test sections to the performance-design relationships developed at the Road Test. Some comments are also made on proposed methods of applying the serviceability to routine evaluation of Minnesota pavements. (Author)
