This paper discusses some ideas on the issues facing public transport co-ordinators. Effective co-ordination clearly requires a greater degree of both understanding of, and influence on special transport services by co-ordinators. In Sweden and in the U.S., the market segmentation approach to public transport is gaining in popularity. This means a much more accurate matching of the needs of users to the types of services and vehicles provided across the whole spectrum of services; including conventional bus and rail services, school transport and the many services for groups with special needs. Probably the most important pre-requisite for such a system in the U.K. is data. The need for some sort of client/user-based information system.
