Literature on exhaust plumes was surveyed and experiments were performed to obtain information about plume formation, plume shape, droplet distribution, the composition of the contaminants, and the heat flux in the exhaust plume of the MBB 10 N thruster during pulse firings. Spacecraft contamination was studied. Experimental results were compared to those calculated by CONTAM computer code and a plume flow field formation model concept was derived. A long term program for exhaust plume characterizations is defined.
