U.S. manufacturers of large commercial aircraft and engines dominate world markets, but foreign competition is increasing. Foreign manufacturers have captured a major share of markets for military aircraft, helicopters, small commercial aircraft and business planes. Airbus poses a significant challenge in large aircraft. It is likely that Japan will play a more important role in future airplane and engine manufacturing.
