This study concerned the growth conditions for shrubs and trees planted on the verges and central reserves of British roads to reduce the visual impact of a highway on the surrounding area and also to make a driver's view more interesting. The conditions under which such plants had to survive and flourish were quantified, particular attention being paid to the effect of salt usage for deicing. The information was used to identify areas of the country with varying intensity of salt hazard. The performance of plant species was assessed by controlled experiments and by field trials.
