The research presented in this thesis addresses the development of a computerized decision support system to aid in loading intermodal containers onto double-stack railcars. The Double-Stack Planner (DSP) project is a study of loading operations at railyards, which includes development of a computer program that assists with assignment decisions, tracks load positions, and ensures that safety limits are upheld. The project test site for DSP is the Burlington Northern Railroad's Seattle International Gateway (SIG) intermodal Terminal.
