The memorandum examines the procurement cost of aircraft electronic systems. The results are based on the procurement cost of ten fighter/interceptor avionic systems. The research effort on avionic cost followed two distinct approaches: (1) an attempt to relate the cost of individual electronic subsystems (fire control, bomb-navigation, communications, etc.) to the characteristics of these subsystems; and (2) an attempt to relate total airborne electronic equipment (or total avionic system) cost for aircraft performing similar military missions (long-range intercept, strategic bombardment, etc.) to aircraft design and performance characteristics.
