The construction of a mini-roundabout at a four-road crossing in a densely populated area results in a reduction of the costs of health-care, net lost production, property damage and administration amounting to SEK 25,000-90,000 per year. The finding is the outcome of this economic evaluation of five mini-roundabouts in the city of Vaxjo in Sweden. Another finding was that rebuilding a crossing from give-way construction to a mini-roundabout increased the traveling time, and hence the cost of traveling time, by SEK 4,000-200,000 per year and crossing, depending on the flow of traffic. With regard to crossings in which traffic lights were replaced by mini-roundabouts, however, the cost of traveling time was cut by approximately SEK 1.2 million per year and crossing. It is clear from the calculations that the initial character of the individual crossing (for instance in respect of traffic volume, duty to give way, and traffic lights) has a marked effect on the outcome. With reference to crossings that were previously of the give-way variety, the net cost of each presented statistical death varied from SEK 1 million to just under SEK 11 million, when coverted into a mini-roundabout.
