A program was conducted to develop design technology for integrally armored crashworthy crew seats. The effort included theoretical analysis, design, fabrication, and testing. Dynamic analysis of an occupant seated in an integrally armored crew seat was conducted. Then a seat concept trade-off was performed, a concept was selected and designed, and prototype seats were fabricated. The seats were subjected to a combined static loading test including simultaneous longitudinal, lateral, and vertical components while mounted in a test fixture simulating warped floor conditions typical of crashing aircraft. The seats were then subjected to a series of 10 dynamic tests. (Author)
