The study was initiated in 1985 to investigate possible solutions to the exacerbating problem of inadequate urban transportation in Istanbul. Most of the alternatives included one or both of the following major capital improvement projects: Bosphorus Railroad Tunnel (tube tunnel) -a trans-Bosphorus tunnel linking existing heavy rail facilities on the European and Asian sides of the city; Istanbul Metro--a high capacity underground rail facility serving a predominantly north/south corridor through the business and historical districts of the European sides of the city. The feasibility studies for the tube tunnel and the Metro are summarized in the report.
