The Microgravity Science and Applications Division of the Office of Space Science and Applications (OSSA) is the programmatic sponsor of the Automated Directional Solidification Furnace (ADSF). The ADSF was developed by the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). This is the first of several flights planned for the ADSF to be operated in the Orbiter middeck. These flights are precursors and supplement the flights of a unit to be operated in the Orbiter cargo bay (ADSF II), which is capable of higher operating temperatures. MSFC has been assigned to provide mission management support on behalf of the Shuttle Payload Engineering Division of OSSA.
