U.S rail grain shipments during the third quarter (July-September) of 1998 were the largest since 1995. Despite continued weak demand for export rail movements, total grain carloadings on U.S. railroads were up 2 percent during the third quarter, as compared to last year, and up 11 percent from the same quarter in 1996. This increase in third quarter carloading is the result of continued strong demand for rail transportation on the eastern U.S. railraods. Grain carloadings for the first three quarters (January-September) of 1998 show much the same thing.
