It is the purpose of this experiment to examine the perforrmance and operating properties of a broadcast system based on packet-swtching,, The experiment will consist of placing a ARPA Network Satellite Interface Message Processor (IMP) in the Etam and Goonhilly ground stations. The Satellite IMP at Etam will be connected by land lines to the continental ARPA Network. The Satellite IMP at Goonhilly will be connected by a land line to an ARPA Network IMP at the University of London. The satellite data path will consist of a dedicated 56Kbps multi-destination half-duplex data channel. The Satellite IMPs will have a special interface to accurately time all packets transmitted and received, and to supply a signal which will be notified to accept this signal. The channel unit will also be modified to remove the convolutional encoder and decoder normally used with data, thus allowing a burst acquisition time of under one millisecond and a data rate of 56 Kbps.
