It is argued that intelligent LCD instruments provide a low cost, reliable, and user friendly mechanism for the implementation of an aircraft engine health monitoring strategy. On board maintenance systems such as the maintenance data panel provide an efficient single point access to all aircraft data and can provide an extensive, integrated health monitoring capability. Both types of system are supported by comprehensive ground support capability. Based on totally proven technology, the units are designed to provide maximum benefit at minimum investment. From units of this type, more complex systems can be developed as user confidence and experience grows. This growth will assist in the wider acceptance of on-condition maintenance policies by the certification authorities.
