It is the purpose of the paper to start the process of synthesizing some of the large body of generally uncorrelated data into a useful form for the guidance of the naval architect, particularly the less experienced one. Since there is such a large body of literature, it is not possible in the initial endeavor to synthesize it all in a truly comprehensive manner, thus the scope will be limited to fine-formed single-screw ships representative of the Ro/Ro, container and break-bulk cargo ships which make up the bulk of the U.S. merchant fleet. Only the literature which is most widely known and of proven merit will be used. When possible, design guidance will be presented in the form of equations based on hull parameters which are developed in the early stage of design so that calculations can be readily made.
