The team developed a non-design specific motion-based simulation platform for testing driving characteristics of lunar terrain vehicles in 1/6 lunar gravity at the Johnson Space Center’s SES facility. The goal was to enhance the original system into an agnostic one with improved accuracy and ability to be used for various contractor designs of lunar rover hand controllers, along with enhanced testing tools, giving NASA a tool for independent assessment, engineering analysis, design review, and training capabilities. The team tested the enhanced system with two conceptual hand controllers (an Apollo legacy Dual T-Handle system and a newly innovative Tri-Rotor system) with sixteen test drivers. Results indicated the improvements incorporated into the motion system greatly decreased subject simulator sickness which enhanced handling quality test results.
