Highlights of near-term and longer-term research and development activities, incentives and demonstration activities of the DOE program leading of the commercialization of electric and hybrid vehicles are summarized. Featured items include: aerodynamics as an integral EHV design parameter; research and development progress on near-term batteries; the environmental impact of EVs; preliminary design studies on four continuously variable transmissions for electric vehicle application; and programs with industry for the development of induction motor drives for EVs.
