There are several different approaches to assuring safe and secure vehicles. Seat belt and air bag systems are designed to reduce the risk of injury to passengers in a collision, while anti-skid braking systems avoid accidents by providing sophisticated driving operations on behalf of the driver. The best preventive measure, however, is the avoidance of hazardous driving situations, and for that purpose research and development of a system that assists the driver in recognizing the driving environment and in making correct decisions should be pursued. Nissan's head-up display system and collision warning system using laser radar are included in this category. Applications of sophisticated electronic technologies for image processing, wireless communications between vehicles, and SLIs should be effective in reducing the risk of accidents. The paper discusses future safety systems from electronic engineering perspectives.
