Mars Observer, planned for launch in September 1992, will be the first deep space planetary mission to fully utilize a distributed operations concept for science instrument control. In addition, several of the other concepts proposed by the Mission Operations and Information Systems Subcommittee of the Solar System Exploration Committee have been adopted for the purpose of improving the efficiency and reducing the costs of Deep Space Mission Operations.
