Double-exposure holography used in studies of transonic flow near rotating blades. In holographic interferometry system, two exposures superimposed on film to produce interferogram. During first exposure, helicopter rotor blade stationary. Second exposure made with blade rotating, at instant blade passes through same position it occupied during stationary exposure. Three-dimensional flow-field density data proves helpful in altering blade geometry to reduce loud impulsive noise generated by transonic flow. Variant of technique used to provide qualitative visualization of three-dimensional flow field.
