Unbalanced rotating masses low-cost, low-power, lightweight means of generating scanning torques for scientific instruments. Imparts variety of scanning patterns; continuous circular, back-and-forth linear, and, with aid of indexing mechanism, raster. Scanning rate determined by sizes of moment arms and rotational velocities. System of unbalanced rotating masses proposed for scanning gimbaled sensors that observe Sun from balloon-borne gondola. Two unbalanced masses move sensor aim in circular pattern around center of the Sun.
