The Vaisala-Brunt frequencies of atmospheric waves lie sufficiently near He-filled balloon buoyancy oscillation frequencies to cause a near-resonance condition, especially in the 11.6-24.4 km altitude range. This excitation will hold for such balloons irrespective of size and payload variations due to the independence of balloon buoyant frequencies from size. Vertical perturbations of approximately 5-min period should accordingly be anticipated by balloon flight-control system designers.
