Six thousand metric tons of spent rocket stages and circuit board fragments clutter Earth's orbit amid 1,300 operational satellites, including billions of dollars of spy satellites and commercial communications, weather forecasting and scientific spacecraft. Into that mix, most of which float in low Earth orbit, entrepreneurs now hope to inject thousands of small satellites to satisfy demand for broadband Internet in remote areas. Here, Werner details technologists' ideas for addressing the problem of satellites.
